150 Years of Rutgers Football
Rutgers is The Birthplace of College Football. 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of Rutgers Football. The sport was born in New Jersey when Rutgers and its neighbor, Princeton, played the first game of intercollegiate football on November 6, 1869 on a plot of ground where the present-day Rutgers gymnasium now stands in New Brunswick. Rutgers won that first game, 6-4.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary, both Rutgers and College Football as a whole will launch a season-long celebration. Rutgers Nation will be treated to tales of the past, as we highlight 150 years of football On The Banks of the Old Raritan. That’s 150 years of stories, legends, moments and most importantly: 150 years of you, the fan. You are a huge chapter of this story and we ask that you be a part of our family in this special year.
