The Rutgers Athletic Center, or The RAC as it’s often called, is home to the Rutgers men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling programs, and also hosts some gymnastics and various other events.
Opened in 1977, the RAC is one of the great arenas in the nation to watch college basketball. The fans are right on top of the action. It’s also the perfect-sized venue to see a game.
This 8,000 seat arena has been dubbed, “louder than a 757 from nearby Newark.” The RAC is definitely one of the toughest college basketball arenas in the nation for opponents.
Our cheer and dance teams are at every home game, cheering on both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. They cheer the teams onto the court during their entrance, pump up the crowd during timeouts, and stand arm in arm with the teams at the end of each game to sing the Alma Mater.
The lights go out. The intro video plays. The cheerleaders and dancers are on the court. The mascot is at center court waving the R flag. The excitement in the arena builds. The cryo (smoke) machines go off as each starting player is introduced. Introductions conclude with the announcement of your head coach, Steve Pikiell! Zombie Nation blasts over the sound system with the crowd clapping along. And now…it’s game time!
It’s Halftime! Now for the halftime entertainment. Who will it be today? Could it be RAC favorite, Drums of Thunder? Or how about the legendary unicycle riding Red Panda? Or America’s Oldest Daredevil Acrobat, The Amazing Sladek? The halftime schedule will be released before the season begins! Make sure you get your popcorn out and stay in your seats!
The Knight Pulse tradition was born in 2015 at Rutgers Football games and has become a staple at Rutgers basketball games as well. The fan hype video features the song “The Hum” by Dimitri Vega. Rutgers basketball players pound their chest and that carries over to the fans. The Knight Pulse is also featured in big moments in-game.
“The Bells Must Ring” plays after big plays during time outs. The fight song features a verse that Rutgers fans chant in unison, before the R-U chant takes over the entire arena.
R-U Rah Rah, R-U Rah Rah, Whoo-Rah, Whoo-Rah, Rutgers Rah! Upstream Red Team! Red Team Upstream! Rah, Rah, Rutgers Rah!
Win or lose, the Rutgers Pep Band performs the Alma Mater with the team and fans. The song represents sticking together through good times and bad, On the Banks of the Old Raritan.
From far and near we came to Rutgers, And resolved to learn all that we can; And so we settled down, In that noisy college town, On the banks of the old Raritan.
Refrain: On the banks of the old Raritan (my friends) Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand, For has she not stood Since the time of the flood, On the banks of the old Raritan.
Then sing aloud to Alma Mater And keep the scarlet in the van’ For with her motto high Rutgers’ name shall never die On the banks of the old Raritan.
